Is it fair to say .....?
I'd say half and half. There have always been people who chose not to believe in gods, the ancient greeks and romans had them (atheists, i mean) closer to the end of their civilizations. There are plenty of Hindu's who consider it to be a cultural obligation, but don't really believe in their gods. I think various levels of education and sophistication are involved as well. Also, people don't like being told they are doing something wrong. When someone comes along saying repent, what you are doing is going to get you in some hot water, naturally, you won't want to listen to them, just like kids don't like to listen when parents tell them to stop behavior. No one likes to have to look in the mirror, and admit, i'm not perfect, i need to rely on someone else to be better. Also, i'm beginning to think atheism is a misnomer. Anti theism describes a lot of people who seem, not to disbeleive in a god, but are angry at a god, and therefor, the gods followers who suggest that they might want to get right with the god before it's too late.
