Is this realistic, Can a person or are there people who live like this?

Let's there is guy with a kid, who is poor, lives in an unsanitary place, his wife/kid's mom dies from disease,The kid steals and robs because he is poor. His family is clean, doesan't drink or use drugs. Can something like this happen.
