Is this normal for an appendectomy?

My fiance just had his appendix out. Dr. said it hadn't burst but was very infected. He was supposed to be released the afternoon after, but they made him stay an extra night and tonight again they want him to stay there. He's been running a fever of 103 and still had stomach pains. Is this normal or a sign of something more serious?
