Is this something that people do?

This was so funny, I was going to recommend doing exactly that before I read your entire question. Yes, absolutely go to a good makeup counter like Clinique or go into a Mac store or anywhere where they sell good product and ask for an application. However, each makeup artist is different and you may not like how they do your face. Don't give up, though. Go to a couple of different counters (on different days!) and you will eventually find both an artist and makeup that you like. Remember, they will try and sell you everything and they are pretty over-priced. (That is how they are paid!) I will buy only the most important product (like foundation) and then go to a discount store and buy the other shades like the products they used. Have fun. I also found that the new mineral wear gives you a really lovely put together look. That is what a lot of people are wearing and it is fast, healthy for your skin and really easy to apply. Good luck.
