Recruitment Consultant as a profession?

Is anyone a recruitment consultant here? I have a job interview for this position in a few days and I am going into this job to help people find jobs and because i have a keen interest in psychology, i think i would be a good judge of character in terms of connecting people and employment. but from the blogs i have read, many people apply for this job for the money. i know there is base salary and also commission, but am i being naive thinking connecting job seekers with the right jobs is a form of social work? or mentoring them to help reach their potential in terms of career. any thoughts? have i got this all wrong? is this essentially a sales job?
